Thankful Thursday – Family Legacy

I think part of why I love studying my family history is because I love seeing the strong legacy they have left for their descendants.  I look at the way they lived their lives; standing through adversity, staying loyal to their families when times were tough, working hard at every thing they had to do and I thank God that I came from such strong people.

I am thankful that my grandparents raised their children to believe in God.  I have inherited a strong faith foundation.

I am thankful that my grandparents stayed loyal in their marriages.  I have inherited a strong marriage ethic.

I am thankful that my grandparents lived through the depression and World War II and still dared to have a family, take pictures, and live life .  I don’t see fear of the future or shame in being poor in their stories.

I am thankful that my grandparents worked hard at everything they did.  I have inherited a strong work ethic.  If you want to make your way in this world you have to work for it, don’t look for handouts.

I am thankful that my grandparents are/were good neighbors.  When I go to their towns people remember them with love and respect.

I am thankful that my grandparents are/were real people.  They are who they are, comfortable in their own skin; no masks needed.  I hope I have inherited that quiet confidence.  It isn’t what’s on the outside that matters but the strength and grace within.

I am even thankful for the physical traits I have inherited that aren’t considered typical beauty.  I am short and “solid” , maybe not pretty but strong and healthy.  I inherited frizzy, wavy hair and the Tracy “Cowlick” from my paternal ancestors but when I go to a family reunion I definitely can see the family resemblance.

I am thankful for my Family Legacy and I believe everybody has something they have inherited or learned from their ancestors that they can be thankful for.  What are you thankful for?

  1. Your article makes me want to learn about my family history Rosanna! I will have to ask my Grandma if she still has the research around that she started about 20 years ago. Great perspective!
